Glass Ornament Mobile: Glass Blowing Adventure

I went to a glass blowing class, with some friends, for the first time ever.  It is much harder than it looks!  We each got to make 5 glass ornaments.  This was the amateur class, so we used the small blow torches and not the large ovens.  We may be signing up for some more advanced classes in the future.  We went to Chicago Hot Glass.  They were super nice and made us feel very comfortable.  I definitely recommend them if you are in the Chicago area and are interested in taking a class.

Here are some pictures of our day:

The Process...

^2 of my finished pieces^

Instead of using these the traditional way, I decided to make a mobile with them.  This way, I can enjoy them year-round.  I made them all in beachy colors, so that they would match my coastal bedroom.  I also drilled holes in some sea glass and attached that, along with some beads.  I love the floating effect of the whole thing.
I used regular fishing line to string them.  I handmade the hoop with some wire I had on hand.  Glass drilling is new for me.  I just purchased a Dremel drill and diamond bits for this process.  I am also working on beach stone and sea glass jewelry.  I will blog those things separately.

This would be a neat way to display sea shells and sea glass together as well.  Drilling holes in the objects is the most difficult part.  I will be back to discuss that in a jewelry making post.

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving!

  2. I just stumbled on this blog, LOVE IT. I've always wanted to blow glass, how much was the class and do you have to take the beginning class before you can get into those ovens? You are so creative and fun, keep the blog posts coming. -n

    1. Thank you for following the blog! The ornament class was $65 a person for 5 ornaments. You can sign up for the 8 week course with the ovens at any time. It is definitely not a cheap hobby. =)
