Hello all! I haven't blogged in awhile, because I went on vacation. I spent a weekend in Tampa, FL to celebrate a 2 year anniversary with my love. We had a great time on the beach. We then went to stay with friends in Oviedo, FL. It was good to get away from Chicago's weather! The temps in FL weren't as warm as I had hoped for though. Overall, it was a good trip.On the way to Oviedo, I wanted to stop at Disney World (Downtown Disney) for a pearl necklace and other souvenirs. There is a store called The Pearl Factory that allows people to harvest their own pearl right from the oyster. Being a beach lover, I was very excited to do this. The pearl necklace was my anniversary/Valentine gift from Dan.
My pearl measures at 6mm and was set on a white gold palm tree that has 0.135 carat diamonds in its leaves. I love it very much! I felt very special having someone buy me something so beautiful.
A pearl is formed, when a piece of shell, sand, or bone makes its way inside an oyster's shell. This fragment causes irritation for the oyster. The oyster secretes a shiny substance called nacre to protect from the irritant. This nacre builds up in layers and forms a pearl.
Pearls were the most prized gems before the 19th century. They are unique compared to other gems, because they require no polishing or cutting to be beautiful. They are ready to use immediately upon harvesting. They also hold value based on the rarity of oysters actually producing them. Depending on the species between 1/1000 to 1/500,000 mollusks will form Pearls during their lifespan.
I got my pearl information from this site.
I will be posting some more blogs related to my trip later this week. See you later!
