Campfire Cooking

I love to cook at home in the kitchen, but it turns out a fire pit works just as well.  I had access to a microwave, but I wanted it to be a true camping experience.  I did several foil packs and used a wire basket cooker. I bought the wire basket cooker at Walmart for 5 bucks.

The best part of the fire to cook on is the hot coals.  You don't really want the food surrounded by flames.  It is best to use heavy duty foil or to double layer the regular stuff.

Cheesy Potatoes:
I bought tiny potatoes and sliced them into small pieces.  I added chopped onion, a mix of spices, and some shredded cheese.

Spray the foil with cooking spray, add your ingredients, and then fold your foil into a pocket.

I cooked the potatoes for about 15 minutes on the hot coals and flipped the pack often.  The smell of the onions will kinda tell you when everything is getting cooked.

I also cooked some beer infused chicken brats in the wire basket, I added a foil pack of chopped onions to eat with them, and did corn on the cob wrapped in foil.  The brats cooked faster than the rest, so I just removed them and continued cooking the rest.   The corn cooked for about 10 minutes.  I made sure to flip those as well.   Everything cook perfectly!

Some other foods that can be cooked over the fire are:
Burgers
Hot Dogs
Scrambled eggs and sausage, in a foil pack.
Cheesy veggies, in a foil pack.
Steaks
Chicken
S'mores
And I am sure the list goes on... Here are some sites with other ideas: Foil Dinners, Camping Recipes

It makes the camping experience more fun!  So, next time you are in the great outdoors, give it a try.

We stayed at Crazy Horse Campground in Brodhead, WI.  We were the first ones into their brand new cabins!   I highly recommend this place for a good camping experience. They offer LOTS of activities for a flat fee of 10 bucks a person.  We did the river tubing, mini golf, and swimming pool.  It was a very HOT weekend.

Brodhead is right in the middle of rolling farm land, in the dairy state.  I took some pictures of the countryside.

We also found a place to pick strawberries, so I might be adding some strawberry recipes to the blog soon!
