DIY Suet Bird Feeder Blocks

The birds and squirrels in our yard are very spoiled!  We really enjoy watching them at the feeders though.  They seem to devour the suet blocks very quickly and that can get expensive.  This is a way to save on the cost.

Supplies:
  • Peanut butter
  • Bird seed
  • Peanuts (optional)
  • De-shelled sunflower seeds (optional)
  • Old suet block container

Instructions:
  • Melt peanut butter in the microwave (cook about 1 min, depending on how much peanut butter you are using).
  • Pour seed mix and peanuts into the melted peanut butter, then mix it all together.

  • Grease your old suet containers with cooking spray.
  • Pour the PB and seed mixture into the containers.

  • Put the filled containers in the freezer until hardened.
  • Place the blocks into your wire suet feeder basket.

Another fun feeder to make is this toilet paper roll feeder.  Just cover the tube with peanut butter, roll it in seeds, and then place it on a branch or rod feeder.  I use the rod feeder for the squirrels.  I give them corn cobs.  It seems to keep them off the bird feeders if they have their own feeding station.

We have the Cadillac of bird feeders.  It holds 2 seed feeders (one with mixed seed and 1 with thistle), my humming bird feeder, the suet feeder and a water bowl.  I am hoping the addition of the peanut butter goodies will bring us some Blue Jays.  We already have beautiful red cardinals and bright yellow finches, so the addition of Blue Jays would be great!  I will be trying to find a way to add some grape jelly or oranges to the mix in hopes of attracting orange orioles as well.

The humming bird feeder is an adorable mason jar feeder that I got at Hobby Lobby.

Hope some little birdies by your house will enjoy these snacks too!  See you soon.

  1. How many suet containers will this recipe fill? And how much of each ingredient do you use?
