I did have some frustration with this project (messed up the first time), but overall it was fun. There are MANY variations of this one on pinterest.com.
Supplies needed:
- Canvas (you choose which size is best for you). I did two 8 x 10s.
- Crayons. Use CRAYOLA ONLY!! I found this out the hard way and bought dollar store crayons. They do not melt well at all! The Crayolas melt very quickly. I used a box of 64 for each canvas. I needed this many, because I discarded all of the brown, gray, white, and black crayons. I might do another one with these colors, so that they aren't wasted.
- Hot glue gun
- Hair dryer
- News paper or tinfoil to protect your work space from splatters and drips.
1) Pick out the color crayons you would like to use. I chose to take the wrappers off of mine, but you can leave them on. In order to remove the wrappers in a speedy manner, I use a cutting blade down the length of the crayon to cut the paper. This is MUCH better than peeling off small pieces at a time with your fingernail.
2) Arrange the crayons in the order or design you want on the canvas and hot glue them into place. Just use one single line of glue for each crayon. I tried the flower design on my first try (with the bad crayons), then I decided to just do a straight line rainbow.
3) Stand your canvas against another surface so that it is slightly tilted back. This will allow the crayon to drip down the canvas as you heat the crayons. Put your hair dryer on low, but high heat and hold it a few inches away from your crayons. Wait for the crayons to melt and start dripping down the canvas. You may also "chase" the drips down the canvas with the dryer, so that they reach the bottom. You can blow the wax sideways as well. This is ART, so have fun with your design!
4) Once you are satisfied with how it looks, leave it to dry. Once the wax is hardened again, you are done! Hang it up and enjoy.

I think I have to email this to my sister :) She has a five year old and I think my niece would enjoy doing this!
ReplyDeleteI have seen this in other blogs. I am going to do other things with our broken crayons. Makes great art!
